| Body copy | 32–48 rec · 100 max |
| Image | Square · 1200×1200 max |
| Starting max CPC | $3–$5 USD |
| US minimum daily budget | $25 / day (varies by market) |
| Buying models | CPM, CPC, oCPC, oCPM |
| Context hints | Up to 2,000 per ad group |
| Self-serve markets | 63 countries |
Why the category fits
OpenAI's ad policies (Updated September 10, 2026) state that during the initial test period ads are primarily limited to consumer verticals: lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products or education. Everyday product retail — apparel, home goods, electronics accessories, beauty, pet supplies — is what that household and consumer-goods lane is written for.
The same policies make clear the boundaries of the lane. Adult content, alcohol and tobacco, gambling, political advertising, and housing or job listings are disallowed, and ads must stay consistent end-to-end: an approved creative cannot link to a destination that introduces disallowed content — OpenAI's own example is a food-delivery ad linking to alcohol delivery. For a catalogue business that means the product page, not just the ad, has to stay inside the category.
Who actually sees a shopping ad
According to OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help article, ads serve only to logged-in users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers do not see ads, accounts OpenAI predicts to be under 18 do not see ads, there are no ads in Temporary Chats, and no ads in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
The unit itself renders below the ChatGPT answer as a sponsored card showing advertiser name, favicon or logo, headline, copy, landing-page link and image. OpenAI lists ChatGPT at 1.2B weekly users (ads.openai.com), and advertisers receive aggregate reporting only — views and clicks, never personal data.
Creative constraints for product ads
| Asset | Recommended | Hard limit |
|---|---|---|
| Headline (title) | 16–24 characters | 50 characters |
| Body copy (description) | 32–48 characters | 100 characters |
| Image | Square | 1200×1200 px max |
Example headlines (illustrative copy written for this page — each sits inside the 16–24 recommended range):
- “Restock Bestsellers Fast”24 chars
- “Free Returns on Orders”22 chars
- “Ship Today, Shop Tonight”24 chars
- “Cart-Ready Shoe Deals”21 chars
Example body copy (32–48 recommended characters):
- “Free shipping over $50 and easy 30-day returns.”47 chars
- “Track your order from checkout to doorstep.”43 chars
- “Restock alerts on the items you buy most.”41 chars
Example context hints — up to 2,000 per ad group. They are not exact-match keywords and do not replace geo, platform or audience targeting; they describe your products and use cases so the ad and landing page match the conversation:
- “running shoes for flat feet”
- “restocking office snacks”
- “gifts under $50 for coworkers”
- “cotton vs linen bedding”
- “durable phone cases for kids”
- “holiday gift guides”
Measurement: the events a store needs
The oaiq pixel ships 13 standard events. Four carry most of an ecommerce funnel — contents_viewed, items_added, checkout_started and order_created. The script is served frombzrcdn.openai.com/sdk/oaiq.min.js, and consent is declared before init. Whenever an event carries an amount, it must be an integer in the currency's ISO 4217 minor unit and currency is required (2599 = $25.99; 8900 = JPY 8,900).
// example — install order: consent, init, then events
oaiq('consent', true)
oaiq('init', { pixelId: '<your pixel id>' })
oaiq('measure', 'contents_viewed', {}, { event_id: 'view-1042' })
oaiq('measure', 'items_added', {}, { event_id: 'cart-1042' })
oaiq('measure', 'checkout_started', { amount: 8450, currency: 'USD' }, { event_id: 'chk-1042' })
oaiq('measure', 'order_created', { amount: 8450, currency: 'USD' }, { event_id: 'ord-1042' })Example payloads for a $84.50 order — 8450 is the ISO 4217 minor-unit value. Browser and Conversions API calls sharing the same pixel ID, event name and event_id deduplicate (first event wins). Click-through attribution uses your configured window; view-through is a fixed 1-day window reported separately.
Budgets and billing
Buying models are CPM (Views objective), CPC (Clicks objective) and conversion-optimized oCPC (click billing) or oCPM(impression billing) — ads are never billed per conversion. The auction is relevance-weighted and second-price. OpenAI's recommended starting max CPC bid is $3–$5 USD.
The documented standard minimum daily budget for the US in USD is $25/day, and minimums vary by market and currency. A daily budget works as a 7-day average: spend can reach 2× the daily budget on a single day and up to 7× across the 7-day window — so a heavy launch day is normal, but the weekly total is what the budget controls. Billing is postpay, with card accounts charged at assigned payment thresholds (US example: $25 → $50 → $100 → $200) plus a month-end balance charge.
Where a store campaign gets restricted
- Placement guardrails keep ads away from sensitive and regulated topics — including personal health, mental health and politics — and political advertising is not allowed at all.
- Review covers advertiser, creative and landing page together. Disallowed references anywhere in that chain (counterfeit goods, adult, alcohol or tobacco, gambling) sink the whole ad.
- A Negative Phrases control lets qualifying advertisers steer away from unsuitable conversation contexts, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS are underway.
- Reporting is aggregate only — views and clicks at campaign level. You will never see which shopper saw or clicked your ad.
Markets: who can run a store campaign
Self-serve Ads Manager is available in 63 countries, and the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a listed country. The full grouped list lives on the markets page; advertisers in some newer European markets can currently start via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency or tech partners instead of self-serve. If you would rather not operate the account yourself, Ridoway's managed campaigns cover build, tracking and ongoing optimization for ecommerce advertisers.
How to launch for ecommerce
Confirm your legal entity is based in one of the 63 self-serve markets, then create an advertiser account at ads.openai.com.
Check your catalogue against OpenAI's ad policies: household and consumer goods fit the launch category, while the landing page must not drift into disallowed areas such as alcohol, tobacco, gambling or adult content.
Create a Pixel ID, load the oaiq script from bzrcdn.openai.com, and wire the Conversions API with a shared event_id so browser and server events deduplicate.
Build the ad group: geo and platform targeting (ios_app, android_app, web) plus context hints that describe your products and shopping use cases — they are not keywords.
Write creative inside the limits — headline 16–24 characters, body 32–48 characters, square image up to 1200×1200 — and preview it with the ChatGPT ad mockup tools before upload.
Launch with a $3–$5 starting max CPC and a daily budget at or above your market minimum, then watch the 7-day average rather than a single day.
