ChatGPT Ads for Education (2026)
Digital products and education is one of OpenAI's launch categories — but the rules around restricted topics, audience and review matter more here than the category label. What follows covers the category fit, who sees an education ad, counted creative examples, lead-tracking events and starting budgets.
| Launch category | Digital products & education |
| Serving audience | Free + Go plans, 18+ only |
| Headline | 16–24 rec · 50 max |
| Body copy | 32–48 rec · 100 max |
| Image | Square · 1200×1200 max |
| Starting max CPC | $3–$5 USD |
| US minimum daily budget | $25 / day (varies by market) |
| Buying models | CPM, CPC, oCPC, oCPM |
| Context hints | Up to 2,000 per ad group |
| Self-serve markets | 63 countries |
Why the category fits
OpenAI's ad policies (Updated September 10, 2026) state that during the initial test period ads are primarily limited to consumer verticals — lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products or education. Schools, universities, tutoring services, test-prep brands and online course platforms fall under the education category rules, including its review and landing-page standards.
The same document draws hard lines. Adult content, alcohol and tobacco, gambling, political advertising, and housing or job listings are disallowed. Advertisers in the financial services, healthcare and legal services categories are approved case-by-case with manual review (currently US only), so a finance-adjacent or health-adjacent course should not assume approval. Fitting the education category is a precondition for advertising — it is not a promise that any particular ad will run.
Who actually sees an education ad
According to OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help article, ads serve only to logged-in users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers do not see ads — which means learners using a school's ChatGPT for Education seat are outside your reach. Accounts OpenAI predicts to be under 18 do not see ads, there are no ads in Temporary Chats, and no ads in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
The unit renders below the ChatGPT answer as a sponsored card: advertiser name, favicon or logo, headline, copy, landing-page link and image. OpenAI lists ChatGPT at 1.2B weekly users (ads.openai.com), and reporting back to you is aggregate only — views and clicks, never individual learners' data.
Creative constraints for education ads
| Asset | Recommended | Hard limit |
|---|---|---|
| Headline (title) | 16–24 characters | 50 characters |
| Body copy (description) | 32–48 characters | 100 characters |
| Image | Square | 1200×1200 px max |
Example headlines (illustrative copy written for this page — each sits inside the 16–24 recommended range):
- “Learn on Your Schedule”22 chars
- “Start the Course Free”21 chars
- “Study Smarter Tonight”21 chars
- “Fit Learning Around Work”24 chars
Example body copy (32–48 recommended characters):
- “Self-paced lessons you can start today.”39 chars
- “Watch short lessons, then practice hands-on.”44 chars
- “Join free study sessions every week.”36 chars
Example context hints — up to 2,000 per ad group. They are not exact-match keywords and do not replace geo, platform or audience targeting; they describe your programs and learner use cases so the creative and landing page match the conversation:
- “online data analytics course”
- “learning English for work”
- “study plans for certification exams”
- “coding bootcamp prerequisites”
- “homeschool math resources”
- “continuing education credits”
Measurement: the events an education funnel needs
The oaiq pixel ships 13 standard events. Four fit a course or enrollment funnel — lead_created, registration_completed, trial_started and subscription_created. The script is served frombzrcdn.openai.com/sdk/oaiq.min.js, with consent declared before init. If a paid plan price is included, the amountmust be an integer in the currency's ISO 4217 minor unit and currency is required (4900 = $49.00).
// example — install order: consent, init, then events
oaiq('consent', true)
oaiq('init', { pixelId: '<your pixel id>' })
oaiq('measure', 'lead_created', {}, { event_id: 'lead-3301' })
oaiq('measure', 'registration_completed', {}, { event_id: 'reg-3301' })
oaiq('measure', 'trial_started', {}, { event_id: 'tri-3301' })
oaiq('measure', 'subscription_created', { amount: 4900, currency: 'USD' }, { event_id: 'sub-3301' })Example payloads for a $49/month program. Browser and Conversions API calls sharing the same pixel ID, event name and event_id deduplicate (first event wins). Click-through attribution uses your configured window; view-through is a fixed 1-day window reported separately.
Budgets and billing
Buying models are CPM (Views objective), CPC (Clicks objective) and conversion-optimized oCPC (click billing) or oCPM(impression billing) — ads are never billed per conversion, so a lead form costs you nothing on its own. The auction is relevance-weighted and second-price, and OpenAI's recommended starting max CPC bid is $3–$5 USD.
The documented standard minimum daily budget for the US in USD is $25/day; minimums vary by market and currency. A daily budget works as a 7-day average — spend can reach 2× the daily budget on a single day and up to 7× across the 7-day window. Billing is postpay, with card accounts charged at assigned payment thresholds (US example: $25 → $50 → $100 → $200) plus a month-end balance charge.
Where an education campaign gets restricted
- Restricted categories are handled case-by-case: financial services, healthcare and legal services advertisers need manual approval (currently US only), and a program whose primary offering sits in one of them may be ineligible.
- Disallowed outright: adult content, alcohol and tobacco, gambling, political advertising, and housing or job listings. Course ads are also held to baseline standards on misleading claims and offensive language.
- Placement guardrails keep ads away from sensitive and regulated topics — including personal health, mental health and politics — and political advertising is not allowed at all.
- A Negative Phrases control lets qualifying advertisers avoid unsuitable contexts, brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS are underway, and reporting is aggregate only (views and clicks).
Markets: who can run an education campaign
Self-serve Ads Manager is available in 63 countries, and the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a listed country. See the full grouped list on the markets page; advertisers in some newer European markets can currently start via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency or tech partners instead of self-serve. For institutions that would rather not self-serve, Ridoway's managed campaigns cover account setup, tracking and optimization.
How to launch for education
Confirm your legal entity is based in one of the 63 self-serve markets, then create an advertiser account at ads.openai.com.
Map your offering to the education category in OpenAI's ad policies: courses, tutoring and institutional programs fit; restricted categories are reviewed case-by-case and disallowed ones will not run.
Create a Pixel ID, load the oaiq script from bzrcdn.openai.com, and wire the Conversions API with a shared event_id so form submits from the browser and server deduplicate.
Build the ad group: geo and platform targeting (ios_app, android_app, web) plus context hints describing your programs and learner use cases — they are not keywords.
Write creative inside the limits — headline 16–24 characters, body 32–48 characters, square image up to 1200×1200 — and check it with the creative checker before upload.
Launch with a $3–$5 starting max CPC and a daily budget at or above your market minimum; judge performance against the 7-day average, not one strong or weak day.
