Why the category fits
OpenAI's ad policies (Updated September 10, 2026) state that during the initial test period ads are primarily limited to consumer verticals: lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products or education. Airlines' consumer offers, hotels, tour operators, booking platforms and experience marketplaces sit squarely in that lane.
The boundaries travel advertisers need to watch are the same as everyone else's: adult content, alcohol and tobacco, gambling, political advertising, and housing or job listings are disallowed. Casino properties are the interesting edge case — the policies note that casino ads may be permitted when promoting lodging, travel or entertainment where gambling is not the focus, such as a hotel stay at a casino resort. Ads must stay consistent end-to-end, so a compliant creative cannot link to a destination that introduces disallowed content.
Who actually sees a travel ad
According to OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help article, ads serve only to logged-in users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers do not see ads, accounts OpenAI predicts to be under 18 do not see ads, there are no ads in Temporary Chats, and no ads in the ChatGPT Atlas browser.
The unit renders below the ChatGPT answer as a sponsored card: advertiser name, favicon or logo, headline, copy, landing-page link and image. OpenAI lists ChatGPT at 1.2B weekly users (ads.openai.com), and you receive aggregate reporting only — views and clicks, never a traveller's personal data.
Creative constraints for trip ads
| Asset | Recommended | Hard limit |
|---|---|---|
| Headline (title) | 16–24 characters | 50 characters |
| Body copy (description) | 32–48 characters | 100 characters |
| Image | Square | 1200×1200 px max |
Example headlines (illustrative copy written for this page — each sits inside the 16–24 recommended range):
- “Plan Less, Travel More”22 chars
- “Book Flexible Getaways”22 chars
- “Trips Built Around You”22 chars
- “Cancel-Free Hotel Deals”23 chars
Example body copy (32–48 recommended characters):
- “Compare routes and hold dates before you book.”46 chars
- “Bundle flights and hotels in one search.”40 chars
- “Free cancellation on select stays.”34 chars
Example context hints — up to 2,000 per ad group. They are not exact-match keywords and do not replace geo, platform or audience targeting; they describe your destinations and trip types so the creative and landing page match the conversation:
- “long weekend trips in the US”
- “family-friendly all-inclusive resorts”
- “traveling with carry-on only”
- “first solo trip ideas”
- “ski trips in January”
- “visa-free destinations this spring”
Measurement: the events a travel funnel needs
The oaiq pixel ships 13 standard events, and three cover a typical travel journey — contents_viewed for itinerary or listing pages, appointment_scheduled when a trip-planning consultation is booked, and order_created when the booking is confirmed. The script is served frombzrcdn.openai.com/sdk/oaiq.min.js, with consent declared before init. When you send a booking value, the amountmust be an integer in the currency's ISO 4217 minor unit and currency is required (126400 = $1,264.00).
// example — install order: consent, init, then events
oaiq('consent', true)
oaiq('init', { pixelId: '<your pixel id>' })
oaiq('measure', 'contents_viewed', {}, { event_id: 'view-7712' })
oaiq('measure', 'appointment_scheduled', {}, { event_id: 'appt-7712' })
oaiq('measure', 'order_created', { amount: 126400, currency: 'USD' }, { event_id: 'ord-7712' })Example payloads for a $1,264.00 booking. Browser and Conversions API calls sharing the same pixel ID, event name and event_id deduplicate (first event wins). Click-through attribution uses your configured window; view-through is a fixed 1-day window reported separately.
Budgets and billing
Buying models are CPM (Views objective), CPC (Clicks objective) and conversion-optimized oCPC (click billing) or oCPM(impression billing) — ads are never billed per conversion. The auction is relevance-weighted and second-price, and OpenAI's recommended starting max CPC bid is $3–$5 USD.
The documented standard minimum daily budget for the US in USD is $25/day, and minimums vary by market and currency. A daily budget works as a 7-day average: spend can reach 2× the daily budget on a single day and up to 7× across the 7-day window — relevant for travel peaks, when a holiday-weekend surge can double a normal day. Billing is postpay, with card accounts charged at assigned payment thresholds (US example: $25 → $50 → $100 → $200) plus a month-end balance charge.
Where a travel campaign gets restricted
- Placement guardrails keep ads away from sensitive and regulated topics — including personal health, mental health and politics — and political advertising is not allowed at all.
- Review covers advertiser, creative and landing page together: gambling, alcohol and tobacco, adult content and other disallowed categories anywhere in that chain will sink the ad.
- Casino properties are treated narrowly — lodging, travel or entertainment where gambling is not the focus may be permitted; betting promotion is not.
- A Negative Phrases control lets qualifying advertisers avoid unsuitable contexts, brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS are underway, and reporting is aggregate only (views and clicks).
Markets: who can run a travel campaign
Self-serve Ads Manager is available in 63 countries, and the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in a listed country. The full grouped list lives on the markets page; advertisers in some newer European markets can currently start via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency or tech partners instead of self-serve. For brands that would rather not operate the account themselves, Ridoway's managed campaigns cover build, tracking and ongoing optimization.
How to launch for travel
Confirm your legal entity is based in one of the 63 self-serve markets, then create an advertiser account at ads.openai.com.
Check the offer against OpenAI's ad policies: travel and experiences fits the launch category, while gambling, alcohol and tobacco, adult, political, housing and job content is disallowed — including on the landing page.
Create a Pixel ID, load the oaiq script from bzrcdn.openai.com, and wire the Conversions API with a shared event_id so browser and server booking events deduplicate.
Build the ad group: geo and platform targeting (ios_app, android_app, web) plus context hints that describe destinations, trip types and traveler use cases — they are not keywords.
Write creative inside the limits — headline 16–24 characters, body 32–48 characters, square image up to 1200×1200 — and preview the card with the ChatGPT ad mockup before upload.
Launch with a $3–$5 starting max CPC and a daily budget at or above your market minimum, then read performance across the 7-day average rather than a single day.
